  • Disagreement arises in House of Representatives over Tinubu and Shettima’s use of chartered flights instead of presidential fleet

  • Representative Satomi highlights security risk of faulty presidential fleet, emphasizing its importance for national leadership engagements

A disagreement has arisen among members of the House of Representatives regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s use of chartered flights instead of aircraft in the presidential fleet.

The issue emerged during discussions on a motion of urgent public importance presented by Representative Ahmed Satomi (APC, Borno). The motion raised concerns over Tinubu and Shettima’s recurrent use of chartered flights due to faults with the aircraft in the presidential fleet.

Representative Satomi emphasized the security risk posed by the presidential fleet’s faulty aircraft, which may compel the President and Vice President to opt for commercial flights. He also highlighted the fleet’s significance in facilitating the daily operations and important national and international engagements of the nation’s leaders.

The House Leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo), underscored the importance of maintaining a presidential fleet that adequately serves the nation’s leadership needs.

However, the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers), expressed his view that if the presidential fleet is in good condition, there should be no issue with the President or Vice President flying commercial flights. He referenced the practice of the UK Prime Minister flying British Airways, suggesting that Nigeria should not be an exception, especially in the absence of a national carrier.

In response, Representative Sada Soli Jibia (APC, Katsina) clarified that the flights taken by the British Prime Minister on British Airways are special arrangements.

Chinda countered, stating that British Airways is a commercial entity, not solely at the disposal of UK leaders.

The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, proposed stepping down the motion and assigning the relevant committee to investigate, as it falls within its jurisdiction. Representative Satomi Ahmed withdrew the motion, promising to comply with the House’s directive.

The budget for the Presidential Air Fleet is handled by the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the National Assembly makes substantial appropriations annually for its maintenance.

PDP’ll Secure 80% Votes In Edo Guber Election, Stay Away If You’ve Collected Money From Opposition – Obaseki

Edo politics

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will clinch the governorship seat come September 21.

This is as he aims to secure 80% of the votes for the Party’s candidate, Asuerinme Ighodalo.

His declaration came during the inauguration of the PDP’s campaign council in Benin, where he highlighted the campaign team’s strategic preparation and robust structure.

Addressing party members and supporters, Obaseki praised the qualifications of the PDP candidate, asserting that Ighodalo is well-suited to continue the developmental projects initiated during his tenure.

“We have the best candidate who will continue from where we stop,” Obaseki stated, emphasizing the continuity of progress and governance that the candidate represents.

According to Obaseki, the campaign council has a deep-rooted structure spanning all 192 wards across the state, ensuring that every organ of the party is actively involved in the campaign process.

“Today, we are here to inaugurate the campaign council that will lead PDP to victory in the September 21 governorship election,” he said.

The Governor also outlined the campaign’s focus, which will be based on his administration’s achievements and the potential for future

advancements rather than dwelling on the past.

“The campaign will be based on what we have achieved and the lives we have touched. It will also be based on the future, not the past,” he explained.

He also addressed internal party conflicts, accusing some dissenters within the PDP of being influenced by opposition parties.

“Those fighting PDP have collected money from the other political parties and I want you all present here to join me in flushing them out. Let them stay out since they have collected money,” he remarked.

Northern Stakeholders caution Tinubu against approving French, U.S. military bases in Nigeria

Politics

A group of prominent northern leaders has issued a strong caution against allowing the United States and French governments to relocate their military bases from the Sahel to Nigeria.

In an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly, the leaders emphasized the need for the federal government to resist such pressure.

The signatories of the letter, including respected figures such as Professor Abubakar Siddique Mohammed, Professor Kabiru Sulaiman Chafe, Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, Professor Jibrin Ibrahim, Auwal Musa (Rafsanjani), and Y. Z. Ya’u, expressed concern over alleged aggressive lobbying by the American and French governments.

“The recent expulsion of French and American troops from Niger due to their perceived ineffective presence raises questions about the efficacy of hosting foreign military bases”, the citizens said in the open letter.

They also argued that the primary goal of these bases, ostensibly to combat terrorism in the Sahel, has not been achieved, as terrorism has only escalated since those camps were established.

“It is important to clearly state that there are only dangers and no gains from such military operations

The American operations in Niger Republic, for example, were ostensibly to pre-empt and uproot terrorists from the Sahel region. The result has so far been quite unimpressive, if not a complete failure.

“It is apparent that the presence of American troops and other intelligence personnel in Niger Republic is not serving any useful purpose. This is for the simple reason that terrorism, far from abating, has risen dramatically since the US began its operations in the region,” they said.

Furthermore, the leaders raised concerns about the socio-economic and environmental impacts of hosting foreign military bases.

They warned of increased living costs, environmental degradation, and loss of biodiversity, which could disproportionately affect lower-income populations and hinder sustainable development.
